Orchid Study

Just finished this study of an Orchid.  It was completed on Vellum Bristol paper,
which buckled with each of the washes. The completed flower is overworked.

I will try this again on watercolor paper.
I'm hoping that practice will lead to better washes . . .

Clematis Study Completed

For almost a year I have been following the blogs of Botanical Artists that paint in watercolor. Artist Anna Mason has a wonderful, realistic technique that I have an interest in learning. I've checked out and studied many of the books from our local libraries, but none had the step by step instructions she has made available in her book,  "The Modern Flower Painter" .

Along with lots of digital resource material, I thought her book would be a great place to start, since it has been so long since I have held a paint brush.

Here is the first study from the book. It is an attempt to practice watercolor washes and detail work. The paper is bright white, not gray. I am not sure why the process of uploading the photos is incorrectly adjusting the background shade.

The final study appears overworked, but it is only practice. With time, the mojo will return, the washes will not be so tight and the process will be more natural.
