2015 Finish-Along - 3rd Quarter

Here is the list of Unfinished Projects for the 3rd quarter of 2015. Although the list seems to be the same, there has been some progress.

 1. Baltimore Beauty - Felted Wool - with temps in the 90's, this project has been packed away until fall.

   2. The Colors of Sweet Peas - blocks are completed and ready for the lay-out.
 3. Beach Beauty - Top is complete and ready for the mid-arm.

4. Tumbler Charity Quilt - Border needed.

5.  Spider Web - Almost finished. One side left of the binding.

6. English Christmas - No additional progress.

7. Butterfly Beauty - No additional progress.

8. Baby Tumbler Charity Quilt - Top is complete and ready for the mid-arm.

   9. Cardinal Wall Hanging - No additional progress

10.Hunter Star - No additional progress.

11. Stars and Apples - No additional progress.

12. French String - No additional progress.

 13. Lone Star Dreams in Red - Progress has been made and so has a decision. The strips were cut so long ago and not very accurately. The sewing was started and the decision was made that the finished project, although possible, would be very tedious and not at all fun. So, as this was a quilt destined for me, it is now officially off the list of potential finishes. The strips will be cut down for the scrap bins.

13. Green to Yellow, Mile-A-Minute - No additional progress.

 14. Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mystery
"Grand Illusion" - Top is complete and ready for the mid-arm.

15. Kaffe Fassett's "Facet" - Top is complete and ready for the mid-arm.

 16. Grandmother's Flower Garden - Top is complete but still unsure if the quilting will be done by hand or machine.

 17. Narragansett Bay Quilters - Block of the Month. Still in bits and pieces.

18. Bonnie Hunter's Narragansett Blues - New to the list and still in bits and pieces. . .
This started as a "leader / ender" project but has since taken over the sewing machine.

19. Sailboat - just found!
Not sure how this will be finished but at least it has made it to the UFO list!

More Placemats . . .

Two more placemats have been completed for the local Meals on Wheels.

I tried to use a decorative stitch on this one. I ended up with large puckers on a couple of rows that had to subsequently be removed. I continued with a stitch in the ditch to get the overall placemat to lie flat.

That brings my total to five right now. They measure approximately 13.5 X 18.5 inches.

And, although not fiber, I have been wanting to get back into painting. I finished a watercolor sketch of a pear following in the style of Anna Mason. Although it looks nothing like the video project on Watercolors with Wow, on its own, it's not a bad first try.

Placemats for Meals on Wheels

Two quilt guilds I belong to here in Rhode Island, are currently collecting
pieced and quilted place-mats to donate to R.I. Meals on Wheels.

The goal is to collect 1,000 place-mats to be delivered to the home bound recipients of a daily hot meal.

I have completed three and have two more that just need bindings. The first one is made from two orphan blocks I picked up at our annual quilt retreat. Not sure where they came from but a much appreciated thank you is being sent out to the quilter that decided to donate them.

This place-mat came about from left over strips which were sewn into a lone star quilt.

This place-mat has six left over blocks from a Slice and Dice quilt.

I did tried a decorative quilting stitch on one but after HOURS of ripping out the puckers, I decided to finish the other four with a simple stitch-in-the-ditch quilting. All have been backed with with this purple.

Each is sized at approximately 14 in x 19 in.

Kaffe Fassett's "Facet"

# 17  UFO Project - begun 2014

I sewed strips for this project as leader / enders while working on Bonnie Hunter's Mystery Quilt Project, 2014.

This pattern is Facet, from Kaffe Fassett's book Simple Shapes, Spectacular Quilts. After much discussion with quilt friends at the annual quilt weekend, I have reduced the size of the rectangles from 8 5/8" x 17 5/16" to 8.5" x 17.25" for the simple reason that the ruler I had with me did not have markings for 16th's and the lighting was not conducive to the fine detail needed for precise measurements. So, that being said, I sewed a couple of rectangles and did not see any change in the overall design or appeal of the smaller rectangle.

The triangles are now up on the design wall. The layout may change as more triangles are added. Another change from the pattern will be the size and shape of the final quilt. The size in the book shows the quilt as square with a border of 4" finishing at 72" x 72".

I will be working on more strips to add either 1 or 2 more rows of diamonds. I'm not sure if I will add a border at this point but I would like the quilt to be rectangular and not square.

Painted Cats of Sorrento

 2015 Finish-Along
19. Kitty Wedding Ring

The Laurel Burch fabric reminds me of the painted ceramics of Sorrento, Italy.

Here are some photos of the process.
I have not had a chance to measure or photograph the whole quilt at this time
so more details will eventually follow . . .

This quilt was started in a class with the Narragansett Bay Quilters Guild,
East Greenwich, RI in 2008. I can't believe it was that long ago.
Of course the only way I know the date is my Quilty friend Peggy-doodle,
who also took the class, finished her project and has a label to provide the date in question.
Thank goodness for friends that don't judge.

The class was taught by a wonderful quilt artist here in RI.
After the class I just packed up all the fabric, brought it home and promptly forgot about it
- for about 6 1/2 years! Then the same instructor was gathering a UFO class -
the premise - bring a quilt you want to have finished and if you succeed,
you receive 1/2 the class fee back.

EUREKA - not only the motivation to finish the quilt -
but also the quilt artist  to show me what to do!
At the start, I was just hoping to get 9 rings together for a wall hanging
but the bits a pieces started to come together and I was having too much fun to stop.
It grew to 5 x 7 (35 rings).

The quilt is finally finished, except for the label and a hanging sleeve
for a local show in September - but of course there is plenty of time for that.
The backing is flannel so it'll be nice and warm for these crazy New England winters.
